GIL SCOTT-HERON
Gil Scott-Heron died on 27th May 2011 that was the day me and my crew A Few Good Men was supporting Slum Village at The Drum in Birmingham. I remember waking up the next day and checking my twitter messages and reading everyone else’s tweets that said R.I.P. Gil Scott-Heron. It was sad to read those tweets as I felt like part of me has gone. He was a deep brother and weather people know it or not, he has in some ways been apart of our life’s. I hooked up with spoken word artist Sureshot a few days later as he has crazy knowledge and a big record collection of the brother as I wanted to do a tribute of Gil’s work. I wanted Sureshot to also host the mixtape as to me it made sense as he’s one of the deepest artist of our time and I really respect his work as we have been on the road a few times performing, I’ve always wanted to do a mixtape project with him and this would have been perfect, but for some reason, it didn’t happen, I didn’t get to record Sureshot’s part. But know this, 60% of this mixtape is Sureshot’s records, this mixtape would of not happen without his help as he was the one that choose the tunes not me. There were so many stuff and a few had to be left out, as it would have been one of those long ass mixtapes. On this mixtape you will hear song’s, spoken word, live performance and even people that sampled his music. Thanks to Kenny Dust, Lyric L, Tony Minvielle, Rich Blk and Sureshot as this mixtape would not be the shape that it has become. I hope people enjoy the life and work of Gil Scott-Heron. May you Rest In Peace.
