22nd February is the date of Nike's re-release classic kicks "Nike Air Huarache OG" and I got asked by Wellgosh (www.wellgosh.com) clothing store which is based in my birth town Leicester, UK to DJ at thier Instore Pre-Release event on 21st February, the day before the official release. This was one of my dreams as a DJ to spin and perform for my favourite sport brand Nike and it's right on my door step at one of the illest stores in the midlands. I called up my Hip Hop partner in-crime MadFlow and we went in to do work. Myself and MadFlow turned up early to set up and soundcheck. Two turntables and a microphone, we were ready to bring the skills and show our side of the story of how we rock. The doors opened at 9pm and customers (who had tickects) came in to the sound of my classic Hip-Hop throwback set while Madflow did his thing on the mic and made everyone feel welcome. Free drinks were served as people was checking out all the kicks that were displayed around the store. My turntables was next to what i call the "Wall Of Nikes" where they had a range of classic Nike footwear from Nike "Lunar Force 1 Fuse BHM", Nike "Free Huarache Light Black", Nike "Blazer Mid Premium Vintage Suede Black/Sail" to Nike "Air Force 1PRM Skive Tec Black", Nike "Cortez Classic OG Premium NRG Quickstrike 'Clash Pack' White", Nike "Field General Free QS Crome" and many more. But it was all about the Nike Air Huarache OG which was originally release in 1991 (The same year I started DJing out) and designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield with inspiration from Native American sandals, the kicks make use of neoprene and spandex – hallmarks of the ’80s and ’90s – alongside smooth leather paneling and a thermoplastic heel counter for flexible support. As the official UK release is on the 22nd February the people here in the store waited till midnight to cop their wear but as It was a few hours away, myself and Madflow did a performance set. Madflow got the Wellgosh customers in the zone with his off the top off the head freestyle to Tammi Lynn's "Light My Fire" beat (the original sample that Dilated Peoples used for their "Triple Optics" single) that I was back spinning. Then we perfore the track "Kickaholic!" (taken from the mixtape "Psykhomantus presents The Abominable Flowman"), a track about Madflow addiction to Nike sneakers. Madflow even changed his lyrics so it would fit perfect for the shop
I've been a fiend
and since the age of 13
i use to roll up in Wellgosh and just day dream
Our second song from the mixtape was "Give it To Ya Raw", followed by "MP's" a new track which will be released on the next mixtape called "Psykhomantus presents Abominable Flowman Returns" this summer. Madflow entertains the Wellgosh staff and customers with his beatboxin' skills and as I return back on the turntables with some more classic jewals, it turned to midnight which only means that the shoe that everybody came for is now ready to be release. People where queing up for their Nike Air Huarache OG's. It was crazy, some customers had odered four pair leaving with a smile on thier face, others for themseleves. Wellgosh stayed open for another half an hour as the muisc was still pumping, a few free beers were still sevred and some some of the people who copped a piar of Nike Air Huarache OG were trying on their new footwear. This is a day I won't forget as I said before, it was my dream to DJ and perform for my favourite sport brand Nike and it happened right here at Wellgosh.
Thank you Wellgosh and thank you Nike.
