Mixtape: REVOLUTION OF GIL SCOTT-HERON mixed by Psykhomantus

GIL SCOTT-HERON

Gil Scott-Heron died on 27th May 2011 that was the day me and my crew A Few Good Men was supporting Slum Village at The Drum in Birmingham. I remember waking up the next day and checking my twitter messages and reading everyone else’s tweets that said R.I.P. Gil Scott-Heron. It was sad to read those tweets as I felt like part of me has gone. He was a deep brother and weather people know it or not, he has in some ways been apart of our life’s. I hooked up with spoken word artist Sureshot a few days later as he has crazy knowledge and a big record collection of the brother as I wanted to do a tribute of Gil’s work. I wanted Sureshot to also host the mixtape as to me it made sense as he’s one of the deepest artist of our time and I really respect his work as we have been on the road a few times performing, I’ve always wanted to do a mixtape project with him and this would have been perfect, but for some reason, it didn’t happen, I didn’t get to record Sureshot’s part. But know this, 60% of this mixtape is Sureshot’s records, this mixtape would of not happen without his help as he was the one that choose the tunes not me. There were so many stuff and a few had to be left out, as it would have been one of those long ass mixtapes. On this mixtape you will hear song’s, spoken word, live performance and even people that sampled his music. Thanks to Kenny Dust, Lyric L, Tony Minvielle, Rich Blk and Sureshot as this mixtape would not be the shape that it has become. I hope people enjoy the life and work of Gil Scott-Heron. May you Rest In Peace.

Roy Ayers Project: Roy Ayers & Pete Rock 24th July

A FEW GOOD MEN (Roc 1, Rhize, E Double D, Psykhomantus)

Time: 8PM-11PM

Venue: Hare & Hounds, 106 High St, Kings Heath, Birmingham, B14 7JZ

Tickets: £15ADV / MOTD from www.theticketsellers.co.uk / 0844 870 0000

After previous unbelievable show with Roy Ayers, American funk, soul, and jazz composer and vibraphone player, we thought we’d invite him back for some more good time vibes. So for those of you who missed his last performance, this is another chance to catch a genuine legend in one of Birmingham’s finest intimate venues.

This groundbreaking project is the first of it’s kind – jazz genius Roy Ayers performing with a Hip Hop/DJ legend PETE ROCK – in a Live band/DJ / Mc format. The show will feature exciting rendition’s of Roy’s most celebrated hits – Everybody Loves the Sunshine, We live in Brooklyn, and many others – with Pete Rock sampling Roy’s music and adding more hip hop flavour with his beats and rhymes.

Constantly performing and recording since the 1960s, he is one of the most famous jazz vibraphonists. He has produced some of the most loved modern soul-jazz records of all time such as, “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”, most influential afro-jazz with musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (Africa – Centre Of The World) and the most seminal jazz-funk, such as “Running Away”. And that’s just the surface. 2004 saw the release of “Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981” which were ‘lost’ sessions tapes that he had discarded. Gilles Peterson described this as the equivalent of finding a lost Beatles album. No doubt this helped him win the Gilles Peterson 2004 Worldwide Lifetime Achievement Award. Roy Ayers is ageless and evergreen and as per the title of another one of hits, remember “We All Live In Brooklyn Baby”.

Rapper, DJ, and producer Pete Rock first emerged in 1991 as one half of a duo with C.L. Smooth, debuting with the All Souled Out EP. A hit LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother, followed before the two went their separate ways in the wake of 1994’s The Main Ingredient, with Rock remaining a prolific studio presence prior to the release of his solo debut, Soul Survivor, on Loud/rca four years later. Dropped from the label, he continued his career as an independent producer, and later signed to Rapster/Bbe in 2001 for PeteStrumentals. Two years later, the label released a two-part compilation of mid-’90s LPs with Lost and Found. In 2004, Rock produced the sequel to his debut, Soul Survivor II, with features coming from Pharaohe Monch, dead prez, Talib Kweli, and former partner C.L. Smooth.

FGM presents The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest (Movie & After Party) 7th July

FGM (A Few Good Men) presents The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest (Movie & After Party)

The Movie:

Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest is a documentary film directed by Michael Rapaport about one of the most influential and groundbreaking musical groups in Hip Hop history. Having released five gold and platinum selling albums within eight years, A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history, and regarded as ico
nic pioneers of hip hop. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group’s innovative musical stylings never seems to diminish.

In addition to chronicling the past, present and uncertain future of the band, the film includes interviews from the Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Pharrell, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers and Common, all of whom attribute some combination of love, respect, and inspiration drawn from the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest.

The After Party:

Music provided by A Few Good Men (Rhize, E Double D,
Psykhomantus & Roc 1) on 6 Turntables.

A night dedicated to A Tribe Called Quest and the Native Tongues movement featuring classic songs by Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Monie Love, Queen Latifah, Chi Ali, Black Sheep, The Beatnuts, Common, Mos Def, Brand Nubian, Leaders Of The New School, Consequence and more.

June

Yes, Yes, Y’all. We are already entering into the middle of the year and the party is just getting started. First, let me thank those that came to the Rest In Power: J Dilla/Baatin tribute and A Few Good Men’s reunion we set off at Birmingham’s Hare & Hounds in February. In March I had a lot of support at my DJ 20th Anniversary gig “20 Year’s & Still Grinding” at Leicester’s The Hub. Tablist With Soul has come to an end at Turkey CafĂ© as it’s had a good four years run so thanks for the support from the DJ’s and side projects that tagged alone with the weekly gig as it was fun. Tablist With Soul will now be a monthly gig at Sumo bar, every first Friday of the Month. Birmingham’s One’s & Two’s has been great as it featured many rap talent from the UK and big support from the community. In April, Rest In Power: Guru (Gang Starr/Jazzmatazz) Tribute featuring A Few Good Men and Miss C Brown at The Hare & Hound was a great night, Guru is still with us. One of the greatest MC’s to touch a mic.

What’s to come you say? Well! June is Birmingham’s Bass Festival month and it’s going to be ill as we’ll giving you that brand new funk flav in your ear like Craig Mack. June 11th Bed Stuy’s Spec Boogie is making the trip across the globe to Birmingham very own Custard Factory (In partnership with Bass Festival). DJ’s supporting the night will be A Few Good Men (Psykhomantus, Roc 1, Rhize & E Double D), Miss C Brown & Mike Bigz. One’s & Two’s (Open Deck Night) returns on 17th June at Birmingham’s Rainbow (In partnership with Bass Festival). Special guests Juice Aleem and Mailk from Moorish Delta 7, host DJ’s Miss C Brown & Mega Stress, Special VJ set from E Double D and main host, ya boy Psykhomantus. On 23rd Birmingham City Council presents Third World Girl featuring Jean Binta Breeze at Library Theatre (In partnership with Bass Festival). This is a poetry event, which also features special guests Kiberley Trusty, Adisa and Michael Brome aka Sureshot. Music by DJ Psykhomantus. Last weekend of June will be a special night in Leicester as we’ll be doing a tribute night to the king of pop. That’s right, on June 25th the day he passed away, myself and Roc 1 will be going back to back of the life and work of Michael Jackson at The Exchange Bar.

Also in June I’m looking to open up shop as I’ll be selling Psykhomantus T-Shirts, Look out for some more mixtapes and find out what’s what on twitter. Let’s go!

Battle Of The Titans. Lil Tim Vs Mouse

For those that missed the Slum Village event in Birmingham on 27th May at The Drum, You'll have heard that this was a big Hip Hop event. A Few Good Men rocking the turntables, Slum Village may have been the main act and what a amazing performance by T3, Illa J and Young RJ, The B Boy battle between Lil Tim & Mouse was mind blowing and who can forget the special appearance by Shabba Doo (who played Ozone from the 80's classic movie Breakin') and Rock Steady Crew's Crazy Legs (from the classic movies Flash Dance and Beat Street). One big night in UK's second biggest city.
