After The Flyover Show

Recovering from Soweto Kinch's May 29th Flyover Show, I must say it was a dope all dayer put together. Apart from the band, myself and DJ Winchester being males (who DJed with me that whole day), this show celebrates women who have made groundbreaking contributions to black british and urban culture without compromising their artistry or femininity.
The show featured local arts Leeanne Stoddart & Tan Poetry, B-Girl Hanifa Queen, Cherelle Skeete, Amanda Hemmings. On the main stage hosted by Marverine Cole and Soweto Kinch was up and coming Birmingham dub step rapper Roxxxanne, RPM, Yelitza, Cherrelle Skeete (This time with Jazz Band Working Tittle), Sarah Sayeed (who i've worked with before in Jonzi D Production's The Surgery), Judy House, Michaela The Poet, Tan, spoken word artist Zena Edwards, The Lovers Rock legend Janet Kay (She was amazing on stage and showed us that she had skills on the drums too), Speech Debelle, Eska Mtungwazi (another amazing performance) and Ms Dynamite performing her urban classics.
Birmingham's rapper Justice was also on the bill but missed her show but was there to support her sisters.

It may of been a gray day with a few rain drops but it didn't stop us enjoying the event.

The after party which myself and DJ Winchester did was mad nice, i was happy to return home all mashed up after being on stage in the day and doing the after party at late noon i can only say... I Love This Job.

GiG: Birmingham's The Fly Over Show, Sat 29th May

Lead by award winning saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch and featuring a stellar rostra,The Flyover Show returns to Birmingham with dynamic and challenging performances on the 29th May. Now in its third year the unconventional inner city festival transforms the grey space beneath the Hockley Flyover into an oasis of cultural expression, celebrating generations of black British music and art.

For the first time this show explores the specific theme of black female identity. The headline artists, include current Mercury Prize winner Speech Debelle, Eska Mtungwazi and Bridgette Amafoh, all successful and highly original creatives, achieving widespread recognition without compromising their art or femininity.

The show also features vignettes, poetry, dance and graffiti from new and emerging voices that aim both to entertain and challenge perceptions. The Flyover Show is perhaps the only festival of its kind, which is a highly credible outlet, for emerging talents from within the city such as rappers Tan, and Roxanne as well as a number of pioneers in the region who are often overlooked, such as Hanifa McQueen-Hudson, Britainʼs first B-Girl.

The Flyover Show is also building on its track record of delivering a highly entertaining family friendly festival, and is gaining in ambition and confidence. Last year the show was instrumental in drawing attention the Mohammed Ali Centre and saving it from demolition. Having attracted artists from as far afield as New York and Johannesburg, as well as Urban music stars such as Bashy and Ty it has become a regular fixture in the local community and across the city.

Video: Keep Plastic People Alive Pt 1

Plastic people is a club, thats so much more then just a club. A focal meeting point for music lovers MC'S, DJ's as well boasting the best sound system in London. Gavin & Tony from CDR Burntprogress booked myself, Atjazz, Red Rack'Em and Christo last year at Plastic which was a very good night, if this place closes its gonna be such a huge loss.

If you dont know about the club, or even if you do, make sure you check out the short film below.

Plastic People, situated at the top of Curtain Rd, in Shoreditch, East London has been at the forefront of nightclubbing culture for the last 16 years. Parties such as Co-Op, CDR, FWD and Balance have solidified Plastic People as the venue to reach to hear exciting new music over a superior sound system.

Recently an application was made to Hackney council for a review of Plastic People's license under what the music community has considered rather spurious claims. You can defend this cultural landmark by signing the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/PP2010/petition.html

Thanks to all those involved in the making of this film.

Keep Plastic People Alive!
